BE IT ENACTED BY THE YOUTH LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA YOUTH LEGISLATURE –
An act to
Designate the Toboggan as the Minnesota State Sled

SECTION I - PURPOSE
The purpose of this act is to recognize the historical and cultural significance of the toboggan in Minnesota and to
designate it as the official state sled. This designation aims to honor the state’s winter traditions and foster a sense
of pride in Minnesota’s heritage.

SECTION II - JUSTIFICATION
Minnesota is known for its snowy winters, making sledding a popular and cherished activity for residents of all ages.
Among sled types, the toboggan holds a unique place in history due to its connection to Indigenous peoples, early
settlers, and traditional winter recreation. Officially designating the toboggan as the state sled will celebrate these
contributions and reinforce Minnesota's reputation as a hub for winter activities. Currently, there is no official state
sled, leaving an opportunity to fill this symbolic gap.

SECTION III - DEFINITIONS
Toboggan: A long, flat sled typically made of wood, sometimes plastic, with a curved front, used for sliding down
snow-covered hills.
State Sled: An official designation recognizing a particular sled as representative of Minnesota’s culture and heritage.

SECTION IV - FUNDING
This act does not require direct funding, as it involves a symbolic designation. Any associated costs, such as updating
official state symbols lists or producing educational materials, shall be absorbed by the Minnesota Historical Society
and existing tourism promotion budgets.

SECTION V – PENALTIES/ENFORCEMENT
There are no penalties associated with this act. The designation is honorary and does not impose restrictions or
regulations on the use or manufacture of other sled types.

SECTION VI – EFFECTIVE DATE
This act shall take effect on December 1st, 2026, following its passage by the Youth Legislature.
