BE IT ENACTED BY THE YOUTH LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA YOUTH LEGISLATURE –
Establish monthly homework-free weekends for all students K-12.
The purpose of this bill is to enact a system where school kids get a weekend free of all homework assigned, on the
second weekend of each month.
SECTION II - JUSTIFICATION
As all of you here are students ranging from 8-12th grade, you all understand the importance of time away from school,
free time to do what you enjoy. Modern students are overworked, many having to stay up late and spend hours just to
finish their work. This bill allows students a weekend away each month to allow students mental rest, time for hobbies,
hanging out with friends, or even working around the house.
SECTION III - DEFINITIONS
For the purpose of this bill, “Homework” is described as any required work outside of class. This does NOT include any
long term projects assigned as long as they are not due the following Monday or Tuesday of the weekend away.
No funding is required for this bill.
SECTION V – PENALTIES/ENFORCEMENT
Compliance with the monthly homework-free weekends will be included as a required item in the district’s annual state
compliance report, where inspectors can talk freely with students to receive feedback on the effectiveness.
SECTION VI – EFFECTIVE DATE
This bill is to be put into effect starting in the 2026-2027 school year.
