BE IT ENACTED BY THE YOUTH LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA YOUTH LEGISLATURE –
Implement elections to decide school principals.
The purpose of this bill is to grant students and their immediate families Minnesota schools the ability to elect a
school principal based on the school they attend. This would allow local residents to vote for a principal, giving them
a personalized school official of their choosing. This lets the school represent the values of the students and their
families, in a more accurate way.
SECTION II - JUSTIFICATION
Many students and their families feel as though they are not heard within the school system that their student attends.
This bill would allow for an enhanced voice for each family; an election system ensures that the principal is
accountable to the students and their families. This bill would increase community engagement and ownership, by
providing the school community with a direct voice and impact in selecting its leadership. This also gives the student
values of civic responsibility because it involves students in the election process, getting them involved in early
forms of voting. This also teaches students the value of an electoral system.
